Mutual Funds

A mutual fund is a managed portfolio of equities and other financial instruments whose units are purchased by a group of investors according to the amount of their investments. These investors have similar investment objectives and through mutual funds are able to obtain increased diversification at a lower cost. The cost of professional money management is split among all investors in the fund.

By investing in mutual funds, investors achieve many benefits such as:

  • Affordability: You can buy mutual fund units even if you only have a small amount of money to invest.
  • Accessibility: You have easy access to your money as you can redeem mutual fund units on any business day. Also, you have access to many markets that aren't otherwise available to individual investors.
  • Convenience: You can buy a diversified portfolio of investments that are professionally managed for you and you don't need to keep track of dividend and interest reinvestment programs.
  • Diversification: By purchasing mutual fund units, you own a diversified portfolio of a wide range of investments, that you might not be able to purchase on their own, and thus you lower the overall risk of your portfolio.
  • Professional Management: Mutual funds give individual investors access to professional money management. Professional money managers work with specially trained research analysts who evaluate investment opportunities before investing your money. They have better access to information than most individual investors and can execute trades on your behalf at lower costs.
